What it is

An isometric action role playing game set in Greek myth. You forge a hero, pick one of four callings, and fight from a quiet olive grove down into the Underworld, up to the marble terraces of Olympus, along the Aegean shore and across the sea to Egypt, where Ammit, Devourer of Souls, waits at the end of the Valley of the Kings. Eleven realms in all, each with its own monsters, joined by a world map of glowing portals in the style of the classics.

Along the way: skill trees and a second calling at level eight, champions with names and grudges, a quest journal, treasure chests off the beaten road, twelve unique relics with powers of their own, pet companions bound to charm relics, a peddler who sells wrapped bundles to gamblers, and two harder difficulties, Epic and Legendary, for heroes who finish the story and want it to hurt.

Play together

Host a realm and the game hands you a room code and an invite link. Friends open the link in any browser, anywhere, forge their own hero on their own device, and step into your world beside you. Enemies hunt whoever stands closest, experience flows to everyone, and the loot goes to whoever grabs it first.

Every hero's name is unique across the whole game, first come, first kept. The Hall of Heroes on the title screen ranks the best players worldwide, from every browser the game has ever been opened in.

On your phone

Titan's Grove installs as an app on iPhone, Android and desktop, straight from the Get the App button on the title screen. On a touch screen it plays like a proper mobile action RPG: a joystick under your left thumb, an attack button under your right that picks its own targets, potions and skills fanned within reach, and the whole game rendered sharp at full device resolution. Solo play works offline.

The four callings

Warrior

Bronze, fury and the short blade. War Stomp, Battle Rage, Whirlwind.

Stormcaller

Sky fire and frost from a safe distance. Thunder Bolt, Storm Nimbus, Frost Nova.

Hunter

The patient bow and the critical hit. Rain of Arrows, Hart's Wind, Scatter Volley.

Soulkeeper

Drain the living, raise the dead. Life Drain, Summon Shade, Wail of Terror.

At level eight every hero swears a second calling, and the pair earns its own title: Thane, Slayer, Reaver, Sage, Warlock or Haruspex.

Controls

Left clickmove, attack Right click, 1 to 6skills Chero sheet Isatchel and stash Sskill tree Jquest journal Tworld map Hdeeds Q and Wpotions Etalk, shrine of Hermes Msound on and off

Every key can be rebound in Settings on the title screen. On touch screens the joystick and attack button take over.

How it was built

Plain JavaScript on a single canvas. No engine, no framework, no downloaded assets: eleven realms, more than twenty kinds of monster, every helmet, palm tree and light beam is drawn in code, and the wind, surf, birdsong and harp are synthesized live in the browser. The multiplayer runs through a small relay I host myself.

The whole game grew out of one long running conversation with Claude, my AI pair programmer, starting from the sentence: can we program a game like Titan Quest together?
